Austin police are warning residents in Northwest Austin to take extra precaution in locking doors and windows because of a large increase in apartment burglaries.
Senior police officer Tanya Normand said there has been a 56 percent increase in apartment burglaries this year in the area, with 116 apartment burglaries since January. The area has seen an 80 percent increase in all burglaries — including cars, homes and businesses — this year, police said.
Normand said the burglars enter through unlocked doors or windows, or pry them open. She said the burglars are taking things that are easily carried out, such as flat-screen televisions, electronics, jewelry and cash.
Police said apartment residents should make sure all doors and windows are locked at all times. Normand said alarm systems or extra locks could deter the burglars. She recommended that windows remain closed so people can not see belongings in the apartment.
Normand said hotspots for apartment burglaries have been near Jollyville Road, Duval Road and FM 620. She said any witnesses to a burglary should call 911.

With the economic downturn there has been a noticeable increase in burglary of residences, businesses, retailers and vehicles in Austin. As the weather warms the Austin Police Department asks Austin residents to be more contentious about securing their home and possessions. Residents are encouraged to secure their garage doors even when outside working in the yard. Preventive measures include displaying empty cash register drawers; sufficient outdoor lighting; installing alarm systems and surveillance cameras; remove obstacles that would obscure windows and doors around residences and businesses; and remove valuables from vehicles. The Austin Police Department appreciates the citizens of Austin being proactive rather than reactive. If a citizen falls victim to a burglar please be prepared to provide the 311 operator with the following information:
311 Operator Questions
¨ Can you tell how entry was made?
¨ What items were taken? Include serial number, model number or any other significant identifier?
¨ The operator will ask you if you would like an ID Call/PC Tech to come to your home for fingerprints and evidence.
¨ Did you notice any suspicious activities in the area leading up to the event or are the suspects known?
¨ Did your neighbors see or hear anything?
In addition, please remember not to move or touch anything as that will alter the crime scene while you are making the report and waiting for the ID Call/PC Tech to arrive.
